NASA Ames Research Center
Created in 1939, the Ames Research Center is a pioneer of Silicon Valley’s technology industry. Founded by physicist Joseph Sweetman Ames as an aerodynamic aircraft wind-tunnel research project, the laboratory was renamed the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958. Today, Ames, located in Moffett Field, employs 2,500 researchers, scientists and developers, operating on an annual budget of $850 million. Ames is a leader in supercomputing, networking and intelligent systems, among many other areas.
